Scattering Seeds
by
Dave Johnson

As a way to promote and give credit to the outstanding artistic talent of South Dakota citizens at or above the age of 60, the South Dakota Health Care Association, along with Home Federal Bank and KELOLAND TV have sponsored the 16th annual Art Show and competition.

The two main divisions of the competition were "Experienced" (ages 60-79) and "Masters" (age 80 plus).  These were further divided into 2-Dimensional art (Oil, Acylic, and Watercolor Painting, Drawing/Pastels, and Photography) and 3-Dimensional works of art (Sculpture and Wood Carving).

It was my honor to be once again a judge for the 3-D part of this competition, and I stand by my choice of Dave Johnson's “Scattering Seeds" as 3-D Best of Show. There were however some questions I had about categorical nomenclature.   Is "woodcarving" not also sculpture? Can wood-turning and scroll saw work be considered woodcarving? How does "wood craft" or assembled miniatures qualify as "sculpture"?  As it turned out, I looked at each entry and tried to assess the perfection in workmanship and presentation, the difficulty of work involved, and artistic originality.
